How to Keep Holiday Distractions from Sinking Your Network

How to Keep Holiday Distractions from Sinking Your Network

December is a peculiar month in the business world. Between closing out annual budgets, planning for the new year, and trying to dodge stale holiday treats in the breakroom, attention spans are running thin. Everyone wants to clear their desk, set their out-of-office autoreply, and mentally check out for a week.

Cybercriminals know this, and they mark their calendars accordingly.

The holiday season reliably brings a sharp increase in targeted cyberattacks. Attackers do not need complicated zero-day exploits when they can simply take advantage of an exhausted employee trying to track an incoming package or finalize a last-minute vendor payment before the books close on December 31st.

Here are the primary seasonal scams circulating right now, along with the straightforward habits that will keep your business safe through the new year.

The Seasonal Phishing Lineup

Most holiday scams are not technologically revolutionary, but they are exceptionally well-timed. Attackers target the exact things hitting corporate inboxes throughout December:

  • Fake shipping updates - When employees order gifts to the office or wait on critical year-end office supplies, delivery notices are expected. Scammers spoof major logistics carriers with messages claiming a delivery failed, an address is missing, or a fee is owed. One hurried click on a malicious tracking link, and malware is quietly downloaded to the local workstation.
  • The spoofed "Holiday Bonus" email - This scam is particularly nasty because it weaponizes natural curiosity and anticipation. An email appearing to come from the CEO, HR, or payroll announces a special holiday bonus or an updated year-end compensation schedule. It asks the recipient to log in to an external portal to view the amount or download a password-protected spreadsheet.
  • Fraudulent year-end invoice request - Accounting departments face intense pressure to process payments before year-end. Attackers impersonate established vendors, claiming their banking details have changed and requesting that pending payments be routed to a new account. If the accounting team is rushing to beat the holiday cutoff, thousands of dollars can vanish into a fraudulent account before anyone notices.

Spotting Holiday Phishing: Quick Red Flags

You do not need to be a forensic IT specialist to spot most phishing attempts. You just need to slow down for five seconds and look for three specific indicators:

Inspect the Actual Sender Address

An email might display "Executive Office" but looking at the actual domain behind the name reveals something like . If the domain does not match the actual organization, delete it.

Look for Manufactured Urgency

Scammers rely on panic to bypass critical thinking. Phrases like "Immediate action required within 2 hours," "Package will be returned to sender today," or "Wire payment immediately to avoid contract cancellation" are designed to rush you. Genuine vendors and shipping providers rarely give 90-minute ultimatums.

Hover Before You Click

Hover your cursor over links before clicking on them. The preview URL that appears in the bottom corner of your screen should match the official website. If an alleged invoice link points to an unfamiliar web address or an external file-sharing site, leave it alone.

A Non-Negotiable Protocol: Double-Check Payment Details

The single most expensive holiday mistake a company can make is redirecting a vendor payment based on an email request. If an email arrives claiming an existing vendor has updated their bank name, routing number, or payment terms, treat it as hostile until proven otherwise. The procedure to verify this is simple:

  • Do NOT reply to the email requesting the change. If an attacker has compromised the vendor's email system, they will simply reply to your confirmation request and tell you everything is fine.
  • Do NOT use the phone number listed in the email or attached invoice.
  • Pick up the phone and call the verified number on file. Reach out to your established contact using the phone number already stored in your accounting software or master services agreement.
  • Verbally confirm the banking details. Have your contact read the routing and account numbers aloud.

This process takes roughly three minutes. Recovering a misdirected wire transfer takes months, and more often than not, the money is gone forever.

The Easiest Security Move: Lock Your Workstation

Physical security drops significantly in late December. Offices thin out, cleaning crews and temporary maintenance staff rotate through buildings, and employees frequently work from crowded coffee shops or airport lounges.

Leaving a workstation logged in while you step away—even for five minutes—leaves corporate networks, saved passwords, and sensitive company data wide open.

Make locking your screen an automatic reflex every time you step away from your desk:

On Windows: Press Windows Key + L. (It takes half a second.)

On Mac: Press Control + Command + Q.

If you are packing up your laptop to travel or leave the office for the holidays, shut the machine down completely rather than simply closing the lid. Powering down ensures that full-disk encryption kicks in and pending security patches apply cleanly.

Protecting your company during the holidays does not require a complete shutdown of operations. It requires clear policies, baseline awareness, and an environment where employees feel comfortable reporting potential mistakes without fear of immediate reprimand. If an employee does click a suspicious link, reporting it within two minutes allows your IT team to isolate the device before a threat spreads.
